Vollmer wins three golds on the second night of competition
Santa Clara, Calif. – Jun 21, 2010 – Dana Vollmer (Granbury, Texas) broke a meet record Friday night with her performance in the women’s 100m fly at the Swimnetwork.com Santa Clara International Grand Prix. Vollmer took home a total of three gold medals Friday, with a win in the 100m free, 100m fly and as part of Cal Aquatics 400m free relay team. The meet, taking place in Santa Clara, Calif., runs through Sunday, June 20.
Vollmer won the 100m fly with a time of 57.73, breaking Natalie Coughlin’s (Vallejo, Calif.) meet record of 58.22 from 2006. The top three in the event also included Olympians Elaine Breeden (Lexington, Ky.), who was second in 59.37, and Christine Magnuson (Tinley Park, Ill.), who was third in 59.92.
In the women’s 100m free, Vollmer took home the top spot with a time of 54.47. Jasmine Tosky of Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics was second in 55.90 and Australia’s Marieke Guehrer placed third in 55.99.
The men’s 100m breast saw a close race between Brazil’s Henrique Barbosa and Mike Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill.). Barbosa edged out Alexandrov by nine one-hundredths of a second with a time of 1:02.57. Alexandrov was second in 1:02.66 and Marcus Titus (Tucson, Ariz.) was third 1:03.33.
National Teamer Keri Hehn (Fargo, N.D.) led the women’s 200m breast throughout the entire race to finish in 2:26.93. Kaitlin Freeman of Santa Barbara Aquatics finished second in 2:29.45 and there was a tie for third place with Megan Jendrick (Tacoma, Wash.) and Liz Smith of Stanford Aquatics both finishing in 2:29.62.
The men’s 200m free, featured a strong field of swimmers, including Australia’s Kendrick Monk , Robert Hurley and Patrick Murphy, and Olympians Ricky Berens (Charlotte, N.C.) and Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.). Monk won the event in 1:49.29, Israel’s Nimro Shapira Bar-Or placed second in 1:49.33 and Berens claimed the third-place spot with a time of 1:49.44.
In other races, Canada’s Alexa Komarnycky won the 400m free with a time of 4:10.27. Dagny Knutson (Minot, N.D.) was second in 4:11.28 and Melania Costa Schmid of the University of Florida finished third in 4:12.42. In the men’s 400m IM, Brian Johns of Canada won the event in 4:17.73. Australia’s Thomas Fraser-Holmes placed second in 4:19.13 while William Cregar of Athens Bulldog Aquatics and Ryan Cochrane of Canada tied for third in 4:24.44. The men’s 200m fly was won by Brazil’s Kaio Marcio De Almeida in 1:56.94. Stefan Hirniak of Canada was second in 1:59.74 and David Mosko (Cincinnati, Ohio) was third in 2:00.79.
The Swimnetwork.com Santa Clara International Grand Prix continues Saturday with ten events. The competition will include prelims and finals in the women’s 400m IM, 100m breast, 200m free and 100m back, and the men’s 100m fly, 400m free, 200m back and 50m free. The finals session will also feature the 800m free relay. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. PT and finals start at 5 p.m. PT. Race footage from the meet will be broadcast LIVE throughout the weekend on www.swimnetwork.com and will also be available LIVE on Universal Sports, Saturday and Sunday, at 5 p.m. PT.
